Chiaroscuro Part I

by on Jan.30, 2011, under Classwork, Fine Art, Studio

As part of my catching up, I’ve got here all of the rest of the still lives and statue studies that I did in my Chiaroscuro charcoal drawing class.

>>Egg On Your Face – This was actually one of my first drawings I did, and is in graphite. We had to draw an egg still life. Mine needs more darks, to be sure.

>>Ladies’ Night Out – This was a still life that was supposed to have a theme, so I chose some items a lady might take with her on her way out for the evening.

>>Another Fabric Study – This was another fabric study done with a very thick piece of fabric. It needs more midtones, however.

>>Still Life with Bottle – Another still life meant to study dark glass.

>>Mastercopy of Statue Drawing – A drawing of a statue that I had to copy directly. I actually did this same assignment in undergrad. I really wish that I had my old version so that I could compare them.

>>Head Statue Study – A study of a plaster head.

More below the cut. Slight NSFW warning for some nude plaster statue drawings.

>>Plaster Woman Study – A study of a plaster body.

Hey, your work is gorgeous, better and better all the time, IMHO

What course were these works for?

I’m a first year student on line, and doing fashion illustration but someday I know I will be taking a foundation class.

    Thanks.

    Judi,

Thanks so much!! I’m glad you like the stuff. I’ve improved a ton already since undergrad, but still have SO far to go!

This set of pieces are from a foundation class called “Chiaroscuro” which is essentially just a drawing class using primarily charcoal. I don’t think you’ll have to take it, as a fashion student.

Good luck with your studies! Let me know if you have a website, I like to keep up with other students.

    Thanks!! :)

I really enjoyed Chiaroscuro Part I |. Internet marketing is something on the young, wild and woolly industry and it needs to be said there are some operators in Atlanta that happen to be little more than cowboys.

I’ve also been a grad student at AAU in illustration. I haven’t taken classes for a year or so, and am planning to take Chiaroscuro FA 626 this summer. Any idea if people sell the kits used somewhere. I’ve been trying to find a used set. Your work is great, and makes me more enthusiastic about taking this class, though I’m really feeling like I need different classes for my work now. :-)

Hi Eli! I haven’t really heard of “sets” at all, to be honest. All you need is charcoal and drawing paper, to be honest. You can get those things pretty cheaply at Dick Blick. It’s difficult to buy used charcoal because it goes so quickly most students don’t have any leftover at the end of the semester. You’re not the only person who feels like they need different classes for their work, but taking these foundation classes are endlessly helpful even if they feel tedious. I promise you’ll benefit from taking the class! I know I did! :) Thanks for the kind words, and good luck! Are you an on site student, or an online student? If you’re on site maybe we’ll have a class together someday. :)
